A Century and a Half of Tradition: The Alpena County Fair

For over 150 years, the Alpena County Fair has served as the premier summer gathering for Northeast Michigan. Situated along the scenic Thunder Bay River, the fairgrounds have evolved from a simple clearing for livestock into a multi-functional community landmark that bridges the region’s past with its vibrant present.

Roots in the Soil

The story began in 1874, when the Alpena County Agricultural Society was formed to showcase the "best of" the local harvest and breeding. These earliest gatherings were modest, focused strictly on the agricultural output of a community still carving its identity out of the Michigan wilderness.

While the fair moved between various locations in its infancy, it eventually found a permanent home on Eleventh Avenue. This strategic site, adjacent to the river, allowed for the development of the permanent infrastructure seen today, including the grandstands and exhibition halls. The historic cattle barn stands as the oldest structure on the property; in the fair's early days, it was the central hub of activity, housing every species of livestock under a single roof.

The Golden Age of the Track

As the 20th century dawned, the fair’s identity expanded beyond the barn. It became famous across the state for its harness racing. The track was a massive draw, bringing in spectators from far and wide to watch local favorites compete for bragging rights. This era established the fairgrounds not just as a place of commerce and agriculture, but as a premier destination for entertainment and sport.

A Living Legacy

The fair has weathered economic shifts and societal changes, yet its core mission remains untouched. In August 2024, the community gathered to celebrate the fair’s Sesquicentennial (150th) anniversary, cementing its status as one of the oldest continuous community events in Michigan.

Today, the fair remains a beloved staple of the "Sunrise Side," blending youth livestock shows with modern midways. Whether it’s the smell of the barns or the roar of the grandstands, the Alpena County Fair continues to be—at least in the eyes of the locals—the absolute best week of the summer.

For generations, the Alpena County Fair has served as a place where families, neighbors, and visitors gather to celebrate the county’s agricultural heritage and community spirit. What began as a fair centered on farming, livestock, and local exhibits has grown into a valued annual tradition that continues to bring people together.
